Biden says Trump’s handling of presidential documents ‘totally irresponsible’

President Joe Biden said he has not been briefed on the contents of boxes of documents seized by the FBI from former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort.

Biden told CBS during a 60 Minutes interview on Sunday that he is not getting involved in the Justice Department’s investigation into Trump’s handling of presidential records in order to avoid interfering with actions the DOJ may or may not take.

“I have not asked for the specifics of those documents because I don’t want to get myself in the middle of whether or not the Justice Department should move or not move on certain actions they could take,” Biden said. “I agreed I would not tell them what to do and not, in fact, engage in telling them how to prosecute or not.”

When asked by CBS’s Scott Pelley about a photograph released by the DOJ showing apparently classified material spread out on the floor of a room in Mar-a-Lago, the president indicated that he had seen that piece of evidence and called Trump’s alleged handling of the documents “irresponsible.”

“How that could possibly happen? How one — anyone could be that irresponsible?” Biden said.

“And I thought what data was in there that may compromise sources and methods? By that, I mean names of people who helped, etc. And it just — totally irresponsible,” the president added.

When asked whether he believed national security secrets were compromised by Trump’s alleged storage of the documents in Mar-a-Lago, Biden said he has not “spoken to anyone” about the contents of the material found by the FBI at Trump’s home.

“I have not personally spoken to anyone on that, in that regard. I’m sure my administration is aware of all of that, and so is the National Security Council. But I have not,” Biden said.

The FBI removed several sets of classified documents from Mar-a-Lago in August while executing a search warrant for possible violations of the Espionage Act and other crimes, according to the DOJ. Some of the documents reportedly found at Trump’s residence included ones related to a foreign government’s nuclear capabilities.

Trump claimed during a radio interview last week that  “everything was declassified,” referring to the documents found at Mar-a-Lago.
