Support for President Trump among union workers has dropped 15 points over the past year, according to a new poll.
[Opinion: Republicans beware: Union workers are often your margin of victory]
A Reuters–Ipsos poll released Friday revealed that Trump’s job approval among union members declined from 62 percent in March 2017 to 47 percent in March 2018. In contrast, the president’s approval rating dropped 8 points among all Americans.
A number of union workers who spoke to Reuters cited the struggle in the coal industry, the increasing threat of a trade war, and tax cuts as major reasons Trump has lost their support.
Now Democrats are looking to reclaim the Rust Belt, a demographic that usually leans left but turned to Trump in the 2016 election after he vowed to give new life to factories and coal mines.
Reuters polled 902-1,558 union workers monthly and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3-4 percentage points. As for the all Americans poll, 10,121-12,436 respondents were surveyed with a margin of error of plus or minus 1 percentage point.
