President Joe Biden will seek reelection in 2024, despite Democratic soul-searching about whether he is the party’s best hope of holding on to the White House.

“The president, as you know, has been asked that question many times, and he has answered it,” press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters Monday. “His answer has been pretty simple, which is ‘Yes, he’s running for reelection.'”

SOUTH CAROLINA PROVIDES NEXT TEST OF TRUMP’S ENDORSEMENT POWER

Jean-Pierre was asked for clarification after Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) declined to endorse a Biden 2024 campaign last weekend, pending scrutiny of his “vision.” Ocasio-Cortez’s reluctance to endorse Biden coincides with the president’s lackluster approval ratings and his delay in keeping 2020 policy promises, including measures to mitigate climate change and student loan forgiveness.

Other Democrats, such as former President Barack Obama‘s chief political strategist David Axelrod and bipartisan White House adviser David Gergen, have raised concerns about Biden’s age. Biden, 79, would be 82 for his hypothetical second inauguration. He would be 84 at his second term’s conclusion.

Jean-Pierre was also needled on Biden’s economic approach as stocks entered a bear market Monday after the S&P 500 dropped 3.9%, capping off a 20% dip since record highs in January. She repeated that the president is “incredibly focused” on the economy while distancing him from 41-year-high inflation.

“We know families are concerned about inflation and the stock market,” she said.
