Woman who spoke about detransition responds to ‘unfair’ backlash from transgender activists

A woman who told her story about her detransition during a recent 60 Minutes episode is speaking out again after receiving backlash from prominent members of the transgender community.

Grace Lidinsky-Smith said in an interview with Blair White on Wednesday the criticism, coming from the advocacy group Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, and others, is “ridiculous” and “unfair.”

The controversy stems from Lidinsky-Smith’s appearance on CBS over the weekend. Lidinsky-Smith, identified as being in her 20s, told 60 Minutes correspondent Lesley Stahl about her transition process from female to male and back to female.

“Tonight @60Minutes @LesleyRStahl aired a shameful segment fearmongering about trans youth. Parents of trans youth could walk away with the false belief that young people are being rushed into medical transition. That is simply untrue,” GLAAD wrote in a statement on Twitter on May 23.

Some trans celebrities also expressed their dismay, including Laverne Cox, who said the episode was “dehumanizing.”

Lidinsky-Smith argued that the backlash was overblown.

“The extreme reaction of outrage at detransitioners even being shown at all on national TV feels really unfair. … On the other hand, I also think that it is a little bit of an immature reaction, especially from some figureheads,” Lidinsky-Smith said.

Lidinsky-Smith described her transition process as “the worst mistake I ever made in my life,” claiming to have learned a hard lesson while also mourning the loss of her breasts. She said they are “never coming back.”

GLAAD also criticized 60 Minutes for “failing to disclose that a person profiled in the story is the president of a group that actively seeks to limit affirming transition-related healthcare is poor journalism and a disservice to viewers.”

According to the Gender Care Consumer Advocacy Network’s website, Lidinsky-Smith is a member of the nonprofit group’s board, which says its mission is to “empower consumers of gender-transition related care to get the best health care possible.”
