Democratic Socialists of America are all the rage. Its media-savvy candidates are competing for and winning primary and general elections against its parent, the Democratic Party, at the local, state, and federal levels.
One of the things that stands out is how many of their candidates and leaders are immigrants or from first-generation immigrant families. Bahrein, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Ethiopia, Peru, Chile, and other countries of the Global South have contributed to the DSA’s conquest of the Democratic Party.

They want to transform America into a radically undemocratic state. They hate America. They use the Democratic Party but despise it. They’ve told us so. We should believe them.
I find it hard to believe that the immigrant families of these new socialists came to the United States to become Marxists. They came here for what all our forebears came for — a better life with unlimited opportunities. Somewhere along the way, this new wave of anti-American immigrant socialists went off course.
The U.S. cannot remain a stable, prosperous, and democratic powerhouse if we become a nation composed of isolated cultural enclaves, each operating under different norms and priorities. Rather than integrate into American society, many brought their old-world societies and prejudices with them.
I was born in Cuba, a place shaped by much sacrifice and conflict. A country destroyed by socialism. My family moved to the United States when I was a young child. Growing up, I learned early what it means to be grateful for the opportunity to live in this great land. We became the American dream.
America is not defined by where you come from, but by what you are willing to stand for and defend.
I became part of the great American experiment. America’s history is not perfect. But what gives this country meaning is the continued willingness to self-correct and reach for and be something bigger and better.
For me, gratitude has a special meaning. Gratitude for the opportunity to serve my country. Gratitude for the chance to belong to the greatest nation on Earth. Gratitude for a nation that legally welcomed someone from another shore and embraced them with liberty and opportunity.
These immigrant socialists are ungrateful for the freedoms and liberties America offers. They are angry, privileged, and unaccomplished. Rather than embrace their new country, they use its freedoms to destroy it.
This Cuban-born soldier spent 26 years in uniform. Taught at West Point, served in the White House, represented the United States diplomatically, and served as Director of Citizenship and Immigration Services. An immigrant leading an immigration service. It doesn’t happen anywhere else in the world.
I could never imagine a situation where I would be part of or support an ideology dedicated to dismantling our constitutional form of government.
We must do better to inculcate our freedoms into our new citizens. America can only continue to be great if we are joined by a common bond and purpose. For new Americans looking for liberty, socialism should be anathema. Apparently, it isn’t.
IN COMMON SENSE VS. CRAZY, DEMOCRATS LOSE EVERY TIME
As I’ve told anyone that will listen, there can be no room in the American experiment for recreational socialism. A system that thrives on misery, pain, suffering, economic collapse, and family division cannot find a home in America.
Since 1778, the U.S. Army’s motto has been “This We’ll Defend.” America allowed my family a new country, a new life, and a new future. We are America. We are grateful Americans. And in the face of America’s many challenges, and until my last breath, “This we’ll Defend.”
