Europe has developed an expensive habit of financing both sides of Russia’s war. It supplies Ukraine with the means to resist invasion while buying gas from the country doing the invading.

In the Arctic, this contradiction has acquired an almost admirable efficiency: European customers buy the gas, international shipping companies carry it, and European infrastructure helps keep the business running.
