The FBI does more than just investigate politicians like Clinton and Trump

You may have forgotten this over the past couple of years, but, believe it or not, the FBI does more than just investigate politicians like Hillary Clinton and President Trump.

It covers terrorism, counterintelligence, cybercrime, civil rights, organized crime, white-collar crime and, yes, public corruption. The bureau has more than 30,000 agents, the vast majority of whom have nothing to do with the investigations into Clinton’s emails or the Trump campaign’s possible connections with the Russian government.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders made that point during Wednesday’s press briefing. “The FBI is doing a whole lot more than the Russia investigation.” She added, “that’s probably one of the smallest things going on their plate.”

In the debate over now-fired FBI Director James Comey, and in looking for his replacement, we’d all be wise to remember that their primary function is a lot more than just what we happen to see on TV.
