Who: Francis Collins, head of the National Institutes of Health, an agency in the Department of Health and Human Services
What: NIH gave a grant worth $2 million over five years to Dr. Charles Nemeroff at the University of Miami.
Why it’s dim: Nemeroff is under federal investigation by the Department of Justice and the HHS Office of the Inspector General due to an apparent conflict of interest in which he was allegedly paid by a drug company while working on an NIH project pertaining to that company.
Cure: Maybe don’t throw money at someone who’s the target of a federal investigation? At least until he’s been cleared?
