The good, the bad, and Nanette Mitchell on how far we’ve come

DIM BULB Watching TV makes you pregnant

Not quite, but a new study from the respected Rand Corp. finds that teenagers who watch sexually explicit shows are twice as likely to become pregnant or make their partner(s) pregnant than teens not exposed to racy programs. Duh. If you spend more time with “Sex and the City” than your mother, what do you expect? Parents, why not turn off the TV and try talking with your children for a change.

OUTRAGE: Sharks in the voting pool

WHO: Those pesky political supporters – the ones who wait, sharklike, just outside the polling station

WHAT: Maybe not all of them are bad. But the ones who pick fights with voters outside the polls (especially the ones who attack after votes have been cast) aren’t doing anyone any good. In fact, it’s safe to say these “supporters” hurt their candidate’s cause. No one wants to vote for someone whose volunteers berate them, telling them they’re uneducated and morally bankrupt.

WHY IT’S A BAD IDEA: The polling station (or just outside it) is not the place for political debate. Even most politicians stay home on Election Day. Take a leaf from the McCain family’s book and go see a movie and get some Mexican food. The only reason anyone should be at a polling station on Election Day is to cast their vote.

QUOTE OF THE DAY:

“They burned a cross on my front lawn when I was eight years old after the Brown decision (Brown v. Board of Education) in 1954, so it’s hard to describe how special this day is for those of us that remember how difficult it used be.” – Nanette Mitchell, 62, mother of former mayoral candidate Keiffer Mitchell  and member of the storied civil rights activist Mitchell clan, outside Guilford Elementary School in North Baltimore on Tuesday. She had just cast her vote for Barack Obama.
