In an interview with the Washington Examiner, conservative commentator and author Ann Coulter shared her thoughts on the current political environment, including topics ranging from President Trump and the Republican National Committee to the Democratic presidential hopefuls.
Coulter began by slamming Trump for failing to fulfill his campaign promise of building a wall on the southern border.
“[Trump] deserves to lose. We don’t deserve a Democrat though,” Coulter said before adding that she has “repeatedly” told Trump that he does not need Congress to build the wall. When asked what she is most satisfied with about the Trump presidency, Coulter said “the tweeting is great.”
Coulter, a former Trump supporter, recently became disenchanted with the Trump administration. She blames this in part on a “saboteur in the administration” who she says has prevented hard-line immigration hawks such as Kris Kobach from serving in the administration.
Coulter remarked:
She later took jabs at Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, for allowing the Republican National Committee to advise the Trump administration, sarcastically calling them “geniuses” and “brain trusts.” She also said the RNC has not learned the lessons of the 2016 election because it still panders to donors on immigration and believes Hispanic votes can be won by advocating for amnesty.
“[Jared and Ivanka] don’t know anything about politics,” Coulter said. “[The RNC] are the people that tried to prevent your father-in-law from becoming president.”
Coulter added that she always suspected Hispanics would support Trump more than other Republican presidential nominees such as Mitt Romney and John McCain. She told a story of how, during a Christmas party in 2015, wealthy South Florida Republican donors were shocked at Hispanic support for Trump.
She claimed they said, “I don’t understand this. We’re all for Bush. And all the Hispanic help, they’re all for Trump!”
Coulter also weighed in on deporting DACA recipients, saying that Trump and Obama are wrong to deport felons first before Dreamers, referring to those brought to the country illegally at a young age.
“I want the Dreamers [deported] first. Keep the felons, get rid of the Dreamers. Because they’re arrogant about it,” she said.
Coulter says she believes illegal immigrants wrongly demand special treatment, saying African Americans are the only group of Americans that can “boss us around” and that she should’ve entitled her book Mugged: Racial Demagoguery from the Seventies to Obama as You’re Not Black.
Referring to immigrants, “You don’t get to leapfrog against Americans who have been here for 400 years,” Coulter added.
She mocked diversity and said the phrase “diversity is our strength” would be like teaching little kids to say “hitting yourself on the head with a hammer is fun!”
Coulter said she hopes a strong, “sane” Democratic candidate wins the nomination so that Trump’s fear of losing might drive him to build the wall. Additionally, she said should Trump lose, this moderate Democrat would be better than one of the far-left candidates.
At one point during the interview, Coulter took shots at Fox News for not booking her for commentary anymore. While she said she did not know the reason, Coulter also said to “call Tucker [Carlson] and ask him” why she was no longer invited as a guest.
“Maybe you can get an answer,” Coulter said. “Women were willing to have sex with O’Reilly just to be on TV. If all you have to do is say something crazy, and you can still be on TV, they’ll say anything! So yeah, if you actually say what you believe, you might not get as much TV time.”
Coulter, who previously authored 13 New York Times bestsellers, announced she won’t be writing another book. “We’re doomed. There’s no point to writing another book,” she said.
Coulter also revealed more about her ideological shift in foreign policy and trade, defending the Iraq War but pointing out how Trump’s opposition to “endless wars” and bad trade deals made her reevaluate her beliefs. She proposed new ideas during the interview, suggesting that Amazon should create a “Made in America” button for consumers to purchase domestic products so they can choose not to buy “crap” from China.
Weighing in on modern libertarianism, Coulter described libertarian individuals and groups such as the Cato Institute as “fake phony frauds.”
“They’re cat’s-paws for big business,” Coulter said. “They only want to talk about things that will make liberals like them. Libertarians are p—–s.”
