Health care can’t be fixed at state, local level
Re: “There’s no way to fix our ailing health care system,” July 23
Mike Thompson’s letter reminded me of when the British tried very hard to stop their colonies from achieving independence, claiming they did not have the educational level and structure to develop their own school system.
In 1655, the English captured the island of Santiago and changed its name to Jamaica. It wasnot until August 1962that Jamaica became independent.
Well, the British colonies have many schools anduniversities, and their educational systems are very competitive. Many of their high school graduatesattend universities in the United States and Europe and excel.
After being independent since 1776, Americans should not be waiting and hoping that state and local governments will reform our ailing health care system. If Canada can reform its health care system, why can’t we?

Opposition to voter ID a sign of desperation

Voter ID laws would definitely add to President Obama’s re-election worries.His margin of victory is disappearing due to his record in office.
One of the few options the president has left is to send his attack dog, Attorney General Eric Holder, to file lawsuits against states that are trying to maintain the integrity of their election processes by requiring a photo ID.
You need a photo ID to cash a check, board a plane or buy an antihistamine, but now our attorney general tells us we do not need one to vote.
These lawsuits are a symptom of a sick administration that is willing to win at any cost.
Fair elections protect everyone who is voting and everyone who is running for office.Obama’s approach simply affirms that he is unable to win without voter fraud.

Theater killings could have been prevented
Re: “Colorado suspect was doctoral student, ‘loner,” July 20
Negligent managementon the part of the movie theater is responsible for the massacre in Aurora, Colo. This tragedy could have been prevented by spending a few bucks. And the promoters of the event are also guilty of disregard for citizens’ welfare.
A big special event like the premier showing of a crazy Batman film attracting thousands of fans and no security? Four armed guards stationed inside the theater and some policemen or deputy sheriffs in the parking lots could have stopped the shooter just by their presence.
And how did the gunman allegedly manage to open the emergency exit door? It should have had better locksand been connected to a loud alarm.
Clearly, there was total lack of security for the event even though there’s a constant terrorist threat in the nation. What a shame, since so many people are dead and so many others wounded.The shooter hada field day as a result of neglect and ignorance.
Where were the chief of police and the sheriff? More than 200 officers responded to the aftermath of this bloody massacre, but not one cop was available toprotect all thosepeople?
