In his remarks at National Review Institute’s annual Ideas Summit, Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey told the audience that his state’s border is not sufficiently protected.
“The border of Arizona is wide open and unprotected,” Ducey said.
The governor noted that one-third of his state’s border is open to the point where “you can walk right across” it. Ducey, detailing his experiences crisscrossing Arizona, spoke of immigration reform with urgency, declaring, “It is long past time we take charge of our border.”
Ducey explained how the drug trade and heroin use in America can be traced backed to “neglect” of border security.
The first-term governor also spoke of America’s important tradition of immigration, remarking, “We all have our own family immigration story, this is something we embrace.”
“I think what we reject,” Ducey said, “is immigration without assimilation.”
