Outrageous tomatoes and a lump of coal

Today’s Daily Outrage: Rotten tomatoes

WHO: Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash.

WHAT: Murray secured $1.65 million from a military spending bill in 2007 for Seattle-based Arcadia Biosciences to study how to lengthen the shelf life of vegetables – or, as Murray explained, to “help our troops in the field get fresh tomatoes.”

WHY IT’S AN OUTRAGE: The free market surely can make it profitable to produce fresh tomatoes without the Pentagon using tax money to pay for it.

WHERE TO VENT: Murray’s Senate office number is 202-224-2621.

Today’s Dim Blub

WHO: Joe Biden

WHAT: Biden was caught on videotape saying he supported “no coal plants in America,” and then saying that he even opposes “clean coal.”

WHY IT’S DIM: A full half of all U.S. electricity comes from coal use, and new technology is making it cleaner all the time.

CURE: A lump of coal in his stocking for Christmas.
