There is nothing on earth so scornful as the self-righteous liberal who sees a black Republican on TV.
The View co-host Sunny Hostin claimed Thursday the Republican Party chose Sen. Tim Scott to deliver the rebuttal to President Joe Biden’s address to Congress for one reason: The South Carolina lawmaker is black.
Never mind that Scott is an accomplished lawmaker, respected and admired by Democrats and Republicans alike. Never mind he is one of the leading voices in the U.S. Senate on criminal justice reform, which is a rather pertinent issue right now.
Nope!
Scott is simply a willing token to the Republican Party, according to Hostin.
“I was disappointed that [Scott] said ‘America is not a racist country’ without also talking about the systemic racism that is plaguing this country,” said The View co-host.
“Why was he chosen to give this rebuttal?” Hostin asked. “He was chosen because he is the only black Republican senator. He is that person. He is the person that Republicans want to put out front because of the problem of racism in this country, and he knows that.”
She added, “I was sort of disappointed that he was used in this way and didn’t take that opportunity to address that type of — this type of issue head-on. That was a disappointment to me.”
Here’s an idea: Perhaps Scott was chosen because he has several major legislative accomplishments notched in his belt already, despite being in Congress’s upper chamber for less than a decade. Perhaps he was chosen because his years fighting for criminal justice reform make him the perfect man for the moment. Perhaps he was chosen because he has a compelling personal story, one that is far more hopeful and captivating than the bleak, redemption-less vision his Democratic counterparts are selling. Perhaps he was chosen because the Republican Party is betting its young, savvy, and well-liked senator from South Carolina has a bigger, brighter political future ahead of him.
If one wants to play Hostin’s cynical game, one can apply it better to failed gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams. The Georgia Democrat is the toast of her party and the press, wined and dined in elite circles as some sort of electoral wunderkind, despite being little more than a political novice. Indeed, before losing to Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp in 2018, Abrams’s only real achievement in politics was serving as a member of the Georgia state House. That’s it. Also, she won all of her House races unopposed.
If we want to talk about politicians being propped up for reasons other than their resumes, perhaps we should look no further than Abrams, who, by the way, delivered the Democratic Party’s rebuttal to former President Donald Trump’s 2019 State of the Union address. Abrams’s address inspired no theories about tokenization from Hostin.
Unlike Abrams, Scott can actually point to his experience and legislative achievements, both of which make him a perfectly reasonable candidate to deliver a rebuttal address. But don’t tell that to Hostin. It would upset her childishly simple, and weirdly offensive, worldview.
