No Tucker Carlson, English won’t be ‘banned’ because Democrats spoke Spanish at a debate

I thought I’d seen peak idiocy at last night’s Democratic presidential debate, when candidates Beto O’Rourke and Cory Booker both broke out into (quite poor) Spanish mid-answer, in a cringey effort to pander to Hispanic voters and signal wokeness. But, as is so often the case these days, the Left’s insanity was quickly outdone by Fox News host Tucker Carlson, who offered a bizarre reaction to the first debate during a monologue on his show.

After showing a hilarious clip of Booker’s terrible attempt at speaking Spanish, Carlson laughs at the camera. But what comes next isn’t funny.

He asks “Got that gringo?” to the audience. He continued:

You can add the English language to the long list of things the Democratic Party considers racist. How long before you’re banned from speaking it? Think we’re joking? Right… better to learn ‘Espanol’ if you want to talk to your grandkids… it’s a brand new world. Hope you’re excited for it.

This screed is unhinged, and frankly, racially inflammatory. Yes, it’s cringey and foolish that numerous Democrats spoke broken Spanish at a debate where the entire audience understands English. But it’s insane to suggest that Democrats believe English is racist, and blatant fear mongering to even hint that English might ever be banned.

Carlson is clearly, once again, trying to rile up his largely white audience, and convince them that their way of life is under threat from immigrants and Hispanics more broadly. That is simply not the case.

Democrats are, in a typically cringey way, just trying to signal their support for diversity in a pluralistic society. It may be misguided and unintentionally offensive to pander in Spanish, but it’s not some apocalyptic warning sign of white society in decline.

If Tucker Carlson really can’t see that, he needs to get a grip.
