For some voters, a single issue does much to spur them to either accept or reject a politician’s entire platform. Where a candidate stands on hot-button topics, which can include gun control, climate change, or funding our military, matters. Unsurprisingly, abortion is one of the most divisive subjects carefully weighed by the engaged members of the electorate.
The Democratic Party collectively favors abortion as a “woman’s right to choose.” To them, the issue is one that concerns the personal freedom of a woman. On the other hand, the Republican Party is largely against abortion. For the GOP, abortion is about the most fundamental of all rights: the right to life. The competing beliefs of self-determination and existence keep abortion at the forefront of our national discussion, but while those who identify as pro-life certainly prize liberty, they realize that life comes first before all other privileges. Because of that, it must be protected.
With the 2020 election around the corner, some disgruntled individuals on the Right may consider supporting a candidate other than President Trump for a variety of reasons. Since a third-party option would stand no chance at winning the election, that only leaves the Democrats. The leftist agenda espoused by any of the presidential candidates vying for the job of the commander in chief is enough to give conservatives pause. Sens. Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders may be the most extreme, but even Pete Buttigieg and Tulsi Gabbard, who, by comparison, aren’t as radical, are questionable enough in their own right. Chief among the reasons to reject any of the Democratic candidates in their entirety is their desire to protect abortion.
The remaining candidates on the Democratic side all support the legally protected “right” to violently and unnaturally terminate life in the womb. Even Sen. Amy Klobuchar and former Vice President Joe Biden, who stand to the right of their colleagues on this issue, still adamantly pledge to protect abortion, not unborn life. On Klobuchar’s campaign site, the senator reaffirms her desire to stand up for so-called reproductive rights, and, in October, Biden tweeted out his desire to codify Roe v. Wade, a move that would protect abortion in every state even if, by chance, it were overturned by the Supreme Court at a later date.

It is the Democratic candidates’ devotion to abortion that makes them the wrong choice for anyone who cares about the unborn, no matter how strongly they oppose Trump. Voting against Trump by consciously voting for an abortion-supporting Democrat is an affront to the precious nature of life as bestowed by our creator. It is one thing to criticize the president for his wrong words and actions, even if you’re on the right side of the aisle. It is another thing entirely to award your vote to someone who would work to harm life in the womb. It is indefensible, no matter how disgusted one is with our current president.
The leader of the country is tasked with protecting its citizens from harm. Naturally, this should include the vulnerable inhabitants of the womb. As made evident by not only Trump’s recent appearance at the March for Life, but his first term, the president is serious about this role. Just as apparent is the fact that each and every 2020 Democratic candidate for president would shirk this duty.
Conservatives who value the pro-life cause may not feel comfortable enough with all that Trump’s presidency entails to end up voting for him. But actively supporting a Democrat who stands on a platform that prizes abortion is simply inexcusable. If a politician fights to protect life, they are worth additional consideration. If not, no personality quirk or policy strength can make up for that dismissal.
