Editorial: Kristen Cox brings character and experience to the Ehrlich ticket

Gov. Robert Ehrlich succeeding himself is how we hope it comes out when the ballots are counted.

But we?d also like to say a few words about his running mate, Kristen Cox, who will become lieutenant governor if their ticket is elected Nov. 7. The current head of the Governor?s Office of Disabilities would bring a host of complementary and strong character and experience qualities to the post of lieutenant governor. Her genuine warmth and calming presence would be a good balance to Ehrlich?s fiery temperament and could help him to smooth differences with the Democratic-controlled legislature. She also brings a keen understanding of how difficult it is to succeed as someone with a disability ? she is almost totally blind ? and the tools necessary to achieve. She told The Examiner that, “The system has been designed to create dependency for people with disabilities. Not intentionally, but that?s one of the consequences. And there?s a lot of incentives for people not to go back to work, not to become independent.”

The determination that helped her to graduate from college by memorizing everything (can you imagine studying without notes?) and to learn Braille after her son was born so that she could read to him, speak to how the long and often brutal process of shepherding legislation and implementing policy would not daunt her.
