Could the Baltimore City Council please pass on the salmon cakes?

WHO: Mayor Sheila Dixon and the City Council
WHAT
: The City Council tried to eject photographers from its Monday luncheon because its members did not want to be photographed eating.
WHY IT’S A BAD IDEA
: Who do they think they are? The crowned heads of Europe? We know the Queen of England is never photographed while she’s eating, but that doesn’t mean the Baltimore City Council should follow her lead. Maybe they didn’t want to be photographed because they were munching crab cakes (excuse us, a spokesman contacted our reporter to let us know that the cakes were, in fact, salmon) and chocolate cake while the city falls into a budget deficit as deep as the Grand Canyon? Lavish luncheons would be a perfect place to cut the city budget.

Today’s dim bulb: Transportation traumatization

Maryland taxpayers are shouldering the burden of $4.8 million in inaugural transportation costs — not to mention the money it will take to cover Maryland’s portion of the D.C. Metro system. If President-elect Barack Obama is such a dynamic fundraiser, why is Maryland taking on so much of the cost of transportation for his lavish inaugural? The least he could do is make sure taxpayers aren’t forced to deal with these costs when we’re already facing a mountain of debt.

Quote of the day

“What else would you expect? Us and the Ravens. … It would be a big game if it was a scrimmage. It just happens to be the AFC Championship Game.” — Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin, minutes after Pittsburgh defeated San Diego, 35-24, on Sunday. The Ravens will play the Steelers in Pittsburgh Sunday.
