Who: Salon editor Joan Walsh
What: Appearing on MSNBC, Walsh said of Obama’s HHS contraception mandate: “We don’t listen to our bishops, why should we should we say that President Obama and non-Catholics have to listen to our bishops and the laws that bishops create?”
Why its dim: This isn’t about laws that bishops created. It’s about the federal government forcing Catholic employers to participate actively in something their Church teaches to be a moral evil. It’s the equivalent of forcing Kosher delis to sell bacon.
Cure: Speak up for the religious freedom of believing Catholics now. Government may well attack your beliefs next.
