Today’s outrage: Phelps a false idol?

Published February 4, 2009 5:00am ET

WHO: Michael Phelps

WHAT: A British newspaper said Phelps was seen smoking from a bong — and then his spokesman tried to bribe the paper to kill the story.

WHY IT’S A BAD IDEA: Even if this story isn’t true, Phelps has been putting himself in some not-so-respectable positions. We can only smile indulgently at his partying habits for so long. Like it or not, Phelps has a duty to the millions of children who idolize him (many of whom idolize him because his mother loves to toot his horn to the children in the school where she works). Phelps can’t have it both ways. Either he’s a hero that children can look up to, or he’s a hard-partying jock who doesn’t deserve our respect.

Today’s bright bulb: Republicans get a new Steele backbone

What’s good for Maryland’s former lieutenant governor, Michael Steele — the new chairman of the Republican National Committee — is good for Maryland. We need the full weight of the Republican Party to revive the struggling remnant of the GOP in this state. Here’s to Steele not forgetting his roots in the once and hopefully future Free State.

Quote of the day

“What happened in the fourth quarter is really old news. … People are focusing on what is going to happen in the first half and it does not look good at all.” — Sung Won Sohn, professor of economics at California State University, Channel Islands
