Outrage: Fast and loose spending

Published February 8, 2009 5:00am ET

Who: President Obama

What: Obama is urging legislators to quickly pass the stimulus package.

Why it’s a bad idea: There’s a reason Republicans keep voting against the package — billions are being spent on pet projects that have nothing to do with stimulating the economy. Legislators may need to move quickly, but they also need to move carefully to avoid unnecessary spending and mortgage our children’s lives to pay the debt this bill creates. This money is not coming from the air — it’s coming from our pockets.

Where to vent: Call your congressmen and tell them what you think of the stimulus bill.

BRIGHT BULB: Removing limitations

Child sex abuse is one of the most heinous crimes around, which is why it’s surprising that the abused can only file civil lawsuits before the age of 25. Sen. Delores Kelley, D-Baltimore County, is trying to change that. She proposes the age be raised to 50 and that there be a two-year window for retroactive claims previously barred by the current limit. We’re all for the change. As it stands now, too many victims are unable to file suit because the statute of limitations has passed.

Quote of the Day:

“The talk around here is not that much different than the talk that’s going on everywhere else. … You have to be careful with things like operating and capital expenses. You’re not going to grow and add a lot of employees right now. You’re just going to hunker down and manage what you’ve got.” – Dick Cass, president of the Baltimore Ravens
