American Express: Just leave home without it

Now, the madness of anti-capitalist wokeness is infecting even a credit card company.

American Express has incorporated critical race theory into its employee training, according to the Manhattan Institute’s Christopher Rufo. The company created an “Anti-Racism Initiative” after the 2020 protests surrounding George Floyd’s death.

Included in this training, Rufo reported, were the “core CRT tenets, including intersectionality, which reduces individuals to a tangle of racial, gender and sexual identities that determine whether he is an ‘oppressor” or ‘oppressed’ in a given situation.” Given this revelation, to parody one of the company’s most favorite advertising slogans, it may be time to say, “American Express, just leave home without it.”

Why support a company that has adopted such a toxic, radical “theory” into their corporation? Moreover, why would anyone working at a credit card company need to learn such things to prepare for the duties on the job? Rufo’s revelation is indicative of how far the political Left’s ideologies have infiltrated society.

Suffice to say, critical race theory has absolutely no place in corporate training. The objective of credit card companies is to provide credit to consumers. This is done without any consideration for one’s race; it is done without any consideration for one’s alleged marginalized background. It is based on a financial meritocracy resulting from personal decisions that people have made in their lifetimes. Slavery that occurred in Virginia in the 18th century, the Dred Scott decision in 1857, Reconstruction in the 1870s, and Jim Crow in the 20th century have absolutely no bearing on any service that American Express performs.

That is, however, unless American Express is going to change the entire structure in which they do business.

In an op-ed for the Washington Examiner, Rachel Greszler pointed out that American Express charges people different amounts of interest based on their credit scores. “The company’s annual percentage rate, or APR, ranges from 13.99% to 29.99%, and lower credit scores translate into higher interest rates,” Greszler states. She makes note that the “average credit score among white people is 725, compared to 612 among black people.”

“AmEx is almost certainly charging black people higher prices for the exact same service,” Greszler asserts.

This is a fascinating point Greszler highlights. It also shows the hypocrisy behind not just American Express, but much of the leftist rhetoric surrounding topics such as racial justice, racial equity, and critical race theory. The wokesters at American Express want everyone else to change, but they do absolutely nothing themselves that will harm their fiscal outlook. The company’s differing rates of interest are entirely defensible economically, but they certainly don’t comport with the notions of “equity” pushed in their “anti-racist” training.

Additionally, if American Express is going to provide such training to employees, then people should hold the company accountable. Put their metaphorical money where their mouth is. Maybe American Express might take some financial losses at the expense of the ideologies that its executives so eagerly want to support.

They will do no such thing, of course. And it’s reasonable to predict that while the company will implement critical race theory in employee training, they will likely never participate in the types of suggestions and conclusions that the theory demands regarding racial equity in its workforce — especially the upper management workforce. All one has to do is take a look at American Express’s executive committee and its board of directors to notice they are only slightly more racially diverse than the Antebellum South. And given our country’s racial demographics, and given American Express’s allegiance to critical race theory, this should be a major no-no.

American Express’s foray into indoctrination is a decision it is entitled to make as a company. As turnabout is fair play, it is also everyone’s decision to determine whether or not to patronize them. But for those who realize the truth about the toxic proselytization that is critical race theory, the choice against American Express may be clear.
