Despite the disgusting allegations, the multiple corroborations, and the indignant self-assurance of the accused, President Trump stands by Judge Roy Moore, because that Alabama Republican swears he didn’t fool around with teenage girls and, well, Republicans just really can’t lose the Senate right now.
“We don’t need a liberal Democrat in the seat,” Trump told reporters gathered in the Rose Garden on Tuesday. Asked if it was worth letting a child molester into Republican ranks to preserve the GOP majority, the president shrugged.
Moore, the president says, “totally denies it.”
With that statement, two things are immediately clear. One, the president is apparently extremely naive. Second, the president is not at all loyal. In keeping Moore under his wing, Trump turned his back on his family, his West Wing, and his most ardent supporters.
The allegations were enough to convince Ivanka Trump, who told the Associated Press “there’s a special place in hell for people who prey on children.” The evidence convinced Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who told Congress he has “no reason to doubt these women.” And the whole episode even soured that great American named Sean Hannity, who personally called on Moore to resign.
But that doesn’t mean much to Trump, because he wants Republicans to keep control of the Senate. And after all, Moore chased those little girls 40 years ago.
