MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow appeared exasperated Tuesday evening as she reported that Sen. Kay Hagan, D-N.C., refused to participate in a debate yesterday against Republican senate candidate, state House Speaker Thom Tillis.
Maddow, who does not hide her liberal leanings, noted that the uncontested debate allowed Tillis to present his plans and ideas to voters uncontested as their extremely close Senate contest comes to a close.
“So, for you, voters, we present this hour-long conversation with just the Republican candidate. On TV. For an hour. Uncontested,” Maddow said. “So he can tell you what he thinks without any time constraints and without anybody rudely interrupting. Two weeks before Election Day. Did I mention this race is basically tied? I did mention that.”
The vulnerable Democratic senator currently leads her Republican challenger in the polls 45.6 percent to 43.6 percent, according to the RealClearPolitics weighted average.
The GOP needs a net six seats if it wants to take control of the U.S. Senate.
