Democrats can’t distance themselves from Black Lives Matter because they’re running it

Over at National Review, Rich Lowry wrote a fine piece this week about the embarrassment that is the Black Lives Matter organization and why Democrats would be wise to keep their distance from it. He failed, however, to mention an important fact: Several top Democrats are now literally running BLM.

The Washington Examiner revealed last week that prominent Democratic lawyer Marc Elias and former White House political director Minyon Moore, both longtime Clinton allies, have taken on key leadership roles with BLM. Filings from the organization show Elias represents the Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation through Elias Law Group, and Moore, who is also advising President Joe Biden’s Supreme Court confirmation team, is now a member of BLM’s board of directors.

The reason this matters is twofold. First, it proves BLM is directly engaging known Democratic political operatives, undermining its claim that it functions as a charity. And second, it shows Democrats are actively trying to direct BLM and help it deal with the financial transparency scandal it finds itself in.

These points provide vital additional context to Lowry’s argument because they prove Democrats have no intention of taking his advice. He writes:

Democrats wonder how they can blunt GOP attacks on culture issues, and believe that if they explain their positions better, they’ll be fine. But the party is positioned so far left that it needs bold gestures. If it wanted to send an unmistakable signal of change, it would denounce the leadership of BLM, call for investigations into its finances, declare that the group’s priorities aren’t those of the Democratic Party, and wear the ensuing furor from the Left as a badge of honor.

Lowry admits that “Democrats won’t do that and can’t do that,” but he blames the party’s capitulation to wokeism as the reason why. That’s only one piece of the puzzle. The other piece is the fact Democrats have embedded themselves in the very structure of BLM. They can’t get out now because they’ve made it their own.
