Debate moderator pushes myth of hate crimes against transgender people

Yamiche Alcindor of PBS was really in the zone when she made sure to note that transgender people are the victims of a lot of violence. But the odds are she doesn’t really understand the situation — or she’s misleading the public knowingly.

She opened a question during the Democratic presidential debate on Thursday saying that, “At least 22 transgender people were killed in the United States this year” and, “Most of them, transgender women of color … What more would you do to stop violence against transgender people?”
