Democratic Rep. Ann Kuster once supported a statewide income tax for New Hampshire — which still has no such tax — yet years later she would neglect to pay her own property taxes.
New Hampshire is one of just nine states that currently have no income tax, and it is one of only two states that currently have no income or sales tax (the other is Alaska). The state relies heavily on property and business taxes, which makes Kuster’s delinquency a bigger deal than it might be in other states.
In 1999, Kuster was on the board of the Courage and Leadership PAC, which was raising money in support of candidates who supported an income tax. Club for Growth Action, a super PAC for the similarly-named political organization, will be spending $750,000 on a TV and mail campaign to publicize these facts in Kuster’s district. The ad, which begins running Tuesday, will be broadcast throughout the district in an effort to support GOP millennial candidate Marilinda Garcia.
“Annie Kuster wants higher taxes for us, but she doesn’t pay her own,” Club for Growth President Chris Chocola said in a press release for the ad. “Kuster supports Obamacare, and all of its job-killing tax increases, and she even voted for a tax on Christmas trees. In the meantime, she was delinquent on her property taxes to the tune of $40,000.”
Last year, a local ABC affiliate in New Hampshire reported Kuster owed more than $40,000 in personal property taxes for the prior three years. At the time of the report, Kuster still owed nearly $11,000 of that bill, which she paid the following day.
At the end of September, the Garcia campaign released a web ad highlighting Kuster’s penchant for spending American tax dollars while not paying her own taxes.
