  • Close enough for government work: Federal agency grossly mismanaged

WHO: Officials with the Indian Health Service in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services can’t account for how they spent $16 million worth of computers and other official equipment, trucks and communication devices like BlackBerries, according to congressional investigators.

WHAT: General Accounting Office probers say the IHS has been plagued by “gross mismanagement.” Computers loaded with personal data have been lost, the agency lacks sufficient internal cost controls to prevent rampant waste and fraud and the management ranks are characterized by deceit and ineptitude.

HOW:  Unfortunately, GAO reports for years have pointed out how this kind of waste, fraud and inefficiency too often characterizes much of the federal bureaucracy, no matter which party controls the White House or Congress.
