World Cup round of 16 predictions

We’re into the knockout stage of the 2018 World Cup in Russia. Here are my predictions on which teams will go through to the quarterfinals.

Saturday –

France vs. Argentina

Although unpredictable, the French squad has had a good tournament thus far. I think they’ll win. Argentina has been poor and lacking in confidence, just barely scraping through to the knockout stage. But this should be an exciting game!

Uruguay vs. Portugal

Portugal. Cristiano Ronaldo is on fire. As with the 18th century Portuguese patriots of old, this squad senses it can do great things.

Sunday –

Spain vs. Russia

Spain just has too much depth of talent for the Russians to handle. Russia has an aggressive side, but as its 3-0 loss to Uruguay showed, it lacks the skill to compete with the top teams.

Croatia vs. Denmark

Croatia. Playing with confidence and skill, the Croatian side has proved itself a dark horse contender for the cup.

Monday –

Brazil vs. Mexico

Mexico. It doesn’t make analytical sense; I just have a feeling. Brazil has been adequate, not dominant, and their team has collapsed before.

Belgium vs. Japan

Belgium may struggle to break down the resolute Japanese team, but in the end, the balance of skill is firmly in the European side’s favor.

Tuesday –

Sweden vs. Switzerland

Sweden. They’ve been strong the whole tournament.

Colombia vs. England

England will triumph, even if Colombian attacking winger James Rodriguez is fit for the match.
