Most Democratic Party leaders appear to be biting down on their tongues to avoid comparing American police officers to the Nazi Gestapo. But as any “Gestapo” Twitter search will attest, the Left isn’t quite ready to give up.
Hence the stupid and dangerous Gestapo tsunami continues to build. As with a real-life tsunami, in which a massive tidal retreat is induced prior to the actual wave impact, liberal activists have taken heart from the great blue retreat — the decision by police officers to scale back their patrolling and counter-gang operations. Which is to say, those activities most likely to deter, detect, and defeat violent criminal activity.
The shift is understandable. These officers now perceive that Democratic mayors won’t have their backs even when, as in the vast majority of cases, they make the right call on the use of force. They also recognize that Democratic district attorneys see badges as war trophies for their own political aspirations.
The results are clear: a tsunami of rising violent crime across major cities.
Democratic mayors aren’t quite ready to admit this reality — yet. Instead, we’re seeing idiotic plays to the far-left — messages like that of Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot last Tuesday. “Under no circumstances will I allow Donald Trump’s troops to come to Chicago and terrorize our residents,” Lightfoot said. The mayor was apparently unaware that just 30 minutes prior to her tweet, gunmen had shot 15 people at a funeral.
This weekend, as Chicago saw three people killed and 59 people wounded in shootings, Lightfoot was tweeting about the census and soccer. How many listed on the census will be dead before its data is finally collated? I doubt the body count will be high enough for Lightfoot to tweet in support of the Chicago Police Department.
Of course, if you’re willing to refer to police and federal law enforcement officers as Gestapo thugs, it’s not surprising that you can’t see reality as it is. This bears noting in that there are actually quite a few significant differences between the Gestapo and American police officers.
For one, were federal authorities in Portland actually Gestapo officers, those detained by them would not have been heard from since. Many would have been tortured and shot. The lucky ones would have been sent to concentration camps. Such was the way of the Gestapo following Adolf Hitler’s 1941 “Nacht und Nebel” or “Night and Fog” declaration granting the Gestapo extrajudicial power to make the regime’s enemies disappear.
The truth is that even while abiding by numerous constitutional restrictions, American police officers are actually quite good at doing their jobs when allowed to do so, as is attested by the dramatic fall in violent crime rates over the last three decades.
The Left is surfing against a rising tsunami. And eventually, when enough voters have had enough of the stupidity and the bloodletting, the tsunami will hit with political effect.
