Who: MSNBC host Chris Matthews
What: Matthews suggested that a move to hold Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt of Congress for obstructing an investigation in Operation Fast and Furious is motivated by racism. “I don’t want to start too much forest fire here, but it is my instinct: Is this ethnic? It smells like it to me.”
Why it’s dim: Holder has refused to comply with a congressional subpoena pertaining to a false claim that the Justice Department made to Congress. The claim pertained to apparent government misconduct that may have resulted in many deaths. What does race have to do with that?
Cure: Be creative. Come up with some other defense of Obama besides “racism.”
