New York Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez wore a dress at the Met Gala that said, “Tax the Rich” to send a message. According to a recent poll, that message did not resonate with most people.
Patrick Ruffini tweeted that in a recent poll, people were asked: “Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez recently wore a dress with the words ‘Tax the Rich’ to the Met Gala, an annual fundraising gala showcasing celebrity fashion. Ocasio-Cortez has described herself as a socialist and favors policies to redistribute wealth from the rich to the poor. Which of the following comes closest to your view of this?”
The results found that only 35% of respondents believed that Ocasio-Cortez’s dress was a productive way “to get her message across,” while 51% said it was “a bad way to send her ‘tax the rich’ message and hypocritical.” Unsurprisingly, those in favor and those against was largely divided based on age. Of those polled between the ages of 18-29 and 30-39, 53% and 54%, respectively, approved of the dress. Of those polled between the ages of 50-64 and 65 or older, 54% and 69%, disapproved, respectively.
Other recent data show that most young people prefer socialism over capitalism. So the aforementioned results aren’t all that shocking. The irony, however, is that the group of people that favored Ocasio-Cortez’s socialist message were lauding her attendance at an event where individual tickets cost at least $30,000. This, of course, is a common occurrence with socialists — preaching about wealth distribution of rich people to the everyday person while they enjoy affluent, wealthy, elitist lifestyles. This was the true revelation of Ocasio-Cortez’s dress, even if it was not meant to be.
