The campaign to tie vulnerable Democratic lawmakers to President Obama’s poor poll numbers continued Monday as Crossroads GPS, Karl Rove’s political nonprofit, released an ad linking Sen. Kay Hagan, D-N.C., to the White House’s policies.
“When we needed Kay Hagan, Hagan chose Obama,” the ad states.
The incumbent senator currently leads her Republican opponent, state House Speaker Thom Thillis, 45 to 44 percent, according to the RealClearPolitics weighted polling average.
The Ace of Spades Headquarters Decision Desk weighted average shows similar numbers: Hagan barely leading with 42.2 percent to Tillis’ 41.8 percent. There is also a libertarian candidate in the race.
With just weeks to go until the crucial Nov. 4 midterm elections, Tillis has taken aim at President Obama’s handling of crises overseas, forcing Hagan to continue to seek distance between herself and the White House.
“This president has failed the American people,” the Republican senate candidate said at an event Saturday, according to the Washington Post. “Senator Hagan has been with him, with her rubber stamp, every step of the way. Our safety and security is more threatened now than it has ever been.”
Hagan pushed back on her opponent’s claim: “Speaker Tillis can only criticize.”
“He has not one idea on his own that he would put forward — not one,” she told reporters Saturday.
