California Democrats want to legislate gendered department store displays

California Democrats have not given up on fulfilling a crucial role of legislating in the largest state in the country: ensuring the interior layouts of department stores are equitable.

For the third time in as many years, California is again considering a bill that would force department stores with at least 500 employees to have a gender-neutral section to display “a reasonable selection” of items, such as toothbrushes or children’s toys, “regardless of whether they have been traditionally marketed for either girls or for boys.”

In a state perpetually on fire, out of water, facing blackouts, and dealing with the highest homelessness and poverty rates in the country, it’s good to know the busybody liberals of California’s Legislature are keeping their eye on the ball. After all, if major department store displays of children’s toothbrushes aren’t something politicians need to regulate, what is?

California Democrats have many ideas on how our businesses and lives should be micromanaged. If they put as much effort into dealing with the major issues California is facing, maybe the Golden State could finally live up to its name.
