If you want to understand just how badly President Trump messed up by signing the $1.3 trillion omnibus last week, look no further than his base.
Apart from conservative commentator Ann Coulter, who has been hilariously railing against Trump recently, the Advocates for Victims of Illegal Alien Crime, or AVIAC, published an open letter asking the president, “How could you?”
“After over two years at railing against all the bad deals made by prior administrations you topped them all,” the letter written by the AVIAC board of directors read. “Many of the board members of AVIAC not only supported your candidacy but traveled with you, appeared on stage with you, spoke at the Republican National Convention for you, as you promised at every stop to reverse the insidious policies that have allowed millions of illegal aliens to invade our country. You stood on stage surrounded by pictures of our loved ones killed by illegal aliens promising to end this carnage. Our hearts have already been ripped from our bodies and you just threw salt on the wound. With the stroke of a pen you made it worse.”
The AVIAC continues to express bitter their disappointment over the lack of funding appropriated towards border security and building the wall as well as not defunding sanctuary cities.
They added to say that President Trump will almost definitely get impeached, writing, “You said you will never sign a bill like this again but don’t worry; you won’t get the opportunity. When the Democrats take control of the House, you’ll be sent a bill far worse personally delivered by Nancy Pelosi.”
Despite the Democrats’ generic ballot lead shrinking in recent days, the enthusiasm gap between Democrats and Republicans has only grown wider. The only silver lining to Trump’s base feeling betrayed is that it could very well lull Democratic voters into a false sense of security where they start to think that the Democrats are basically guaranteed to win the House and Senate in November. That’s what happened with Hillary Clinton in 2016, which drove down voter turnout or allowed traditionally Democratic and Independent voters cast protest votes, leading to her unimaginable upset loss.
But right now, all signs are pointing to a giant Democratic blue wave in November, and President Trump is the only person who can bail out Republicans at the moment.
