Elizabeth Warren can’t stop shooting herself in the head

Someone needs to tell Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., the first law of holes: Stop digging.

The 2020 hopeful seems determined to keep her Native American problem in the spotlight and at the forefront of voters’ minds.

On Tuesday, the senator made a surprise appearance at the Native American conference in the nation’s capital, speaking at an event hosted by the National Conference of American Indians.

In her speech, Warren challenged Congress to do more for Native American communities, including addressing the growing problem of “the alarming number of missing and murdered indigenous women and girls,” as well the disproportionately high rates of suicide and addiction suffered by native peoples.

Warren also went out of her way to praise native women in Congress, including Reps. Deb Haaland, D-N.M., and Sharice Davids, D-Kan.

“The agenda is enormous, and the fights will be tough,” the senator said, according to the Huffington Post.

She added, in reference to a now-worn-out political meme from 2017, “And in tough fights, it is important to have leaders like Cheryl out in front. Cheryl is warm, and understanding, and sharp. She’s forceful and, let’s say it — she persists!”

The speech itself was so-so. What makes the senator’s appearance this week so notable is that it comes just days after the Washington Post proved that she had, in fact, asserted Native American heritage on her Texas Bar registration, where potential employers would see it, and she issued a second apology to the Cherokee Nation for the years she spent claiming to be Native American.

“I can’t go back,” the senator said in her new apology, “but I am sorry for furthering confusion on tribal sovereignty and tribal citizenship and harm that resulted.”

One would think she would do everything in her power to get away from this issue. One would think she would prefer to move on to talk about literally anything else. One would be wrong.

At this rate, the senator will be known to U.S. voters mostly as the lady who used to claim she is a Native American but can’t actually prove it. And Warren will have only herself to blame for it.
