Peace, eh?
WHO: Senators Byron Dorgan & Kent Conrad
WHAT: The two Democrats from North Dakota secured a $295,470 earmark to renovate the 2,339-acre International Peace Garden in Dunseith. The garden’s signature 120-foot Peace Tower is surrounded by 150,000 flowers, seven Peace Poles, reflecting pools, and paved walkways. The garden celebrated its 75th anniversary last June with a cross-border tug of war.
WHY IT’S AN OUTRAGE: The Peace Garden spans the border with Manitoba, one of Canada’s less bellicose provinces. And Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., unsuccessfully argued that it was morally wrong to spend money on a Peace Garden while Americans were dying on the nation’s neglected highways.
