WHAT: Auditors for the Education Department’s inspector general report that 67 civil servants used their government-issued credit cards to pay for personal items ranging from cloths, meals and rental cars.
HOW: More than $49,000 worth of personal items were charged by employees traveling on official business, according to the IG. Among the improper transactions were $17,600 in automated teller machine withdrawals for charges that totaled more than the department allows for meals and incidentals. Another $13,570 was withdrawn by employees not on official business. The IG said it was not clear whether the employees had reimbursed the government.
