Serena Williams career comprises so much more than tennis

After Serena Williams lost the Wimbledon final on Saturday, some fans questioned whether in order to succeed, she should crowd everything but tennis out of her life.

Tennis legend Billie Jean King had said in June that Williams should consider making tennis her top priority:

“She’s got business, a baby, she’s trying to help gender equity, particularly for women of color, she’s actually on the Billie Jean King leadership initiative, she and Venus are both advisors for it. [It makes winning a Slam] much harder. I would like to see her put everything else aside from that. She’s got people working on these things.”

But even after losing to Simona Halep last weekend, Williams disagreed that she should make tennis her sole focus. “The day I stop fighting for equality and for people that look like you and me will be the day I’m in my grave,” she said.

Writing for ESPN, Alyssa Roenigk argued that Williams has not lost focus. Instead, she’s gained perspective. Roenigk wrote:

“What if Williams continues to seek Grand Slam titles, competing deep into the second week at majors while pursuing outside endeavors and finding joy in her sport, but never equals [Margaret] Court’s all-time total? Does it matter? Hasn’t Williams already secured her place in history? And for her, that legacy is about what she is doing and saying off the court as much as what she is accomplishing on it. So shouldn’t we stop asking her to abandon one in service of the other?”

Instead of being criticized for waning at a sport she has dominated, Williams should be commended for succeeding at so much. If she’s already earned the title of one of the best tennis players of all time, why should she stick only to her sport?

Roenigk argues that her other activities help Williams focus on the court as well. She writes:

“Since Williams returned to tennis from maternity leave in March of last year, she is the only woman to play in three Grand Slam finals. As her platform has grown along with her fan base, she has elevated conversations around maternity leave on the WTA Tour, supported African American women in business and launched a direct-to-consumer fashion brand that celebrates diversity. Williams has asserted throughout her career that diving headfirst into interests outside her sport fuels her tennis and fulfills her desire to grow as a person as well as a player.”

Williams has accomplished much over the course of her career, and many of her achievements occurred outside of the tennis court. Her recent comments serve as an important reminder: A diversity of interests is part of a healthy lifestyle, and our lives are so much more than our successes in one arena.
