Some reporter at the White House press briefing on Tuesday asked President Trump if his pronouncement that he would halt immigration during this pandemic was basically him “using the virus now in this crisis to follow through” on reducing the number of immigrants pushing their way into the country.
Trump said no. What his supporters should be saying is: Who cares?
Though we’re still awaiting more details, Trump said what he actually plans on doing is putting a 60-day suspension on issuing green cards to foreigners who want to come here and stay long term, though not all of them. There are, unfortunately, a lot of exceptions, including for those who have immediate family members in the United States and for some other people who want to temporarily work here.
But let’s not pretend that every Democrat on Capitol Hill isn’t “using the virus now in this crisis” to push their own unrelated wishes.
Democratic New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and her crew wanted payments made to illegal immigrants as part of the $2 trillion relief bill Congress passed a few weeks ago.
House Democrats in that same bill wanted to mandate that any business in need of financial relief “has adopted a policy, plan, or strategy to promote racial, ethnic, and gender diversity.”
Ocasio-Cortez, again, said on Monday that “now is the time” to pass her precious “Green New Deal” proposal on climate change.
The New York Times editorial board, representing the conscience of the Democratic Party, said we should respond to the current crisis by essentially unleashing all illegal immigrants in federal custody into the country.
They’re “using the virus now in this crisis” to advocate for their own agendas. Reporters should ask them about that if they’re going to ask Trump.
