Dim, Dumb and Outrageous

DIM BULB God and the soldier

A new Maryland task force is looking for ways to take better care of Maryland’s veterans. We know very little information about our vets, including basics like where they live. “God and the soldier we adore in times of danger, not before. When the danger is gone and all things righted, God is forgotten, the soldier slighted.” This quotation has been repeated by soldiers for generations — and we still forget them when they’re no longer serving overseas. In this computer age, there should be no excuse for losing track of those willing to sacrifice their lives on our behalf.

OUTRAGE: Calling all Republicans

WHO: The hordes of Maryland Republicans who didn’t show their faces on Election Day.

WHAT: Nationwide, the percentage of eligible Republican voters who turned out to the polls was down more than 1 percent this year. In Maryland, however, the percentage of eligible Republicans out to the polls fell about 5 percentage points and forced the total turnout down from about 61 percent to about 57 percent, according to a study released last week.

WHY IT’S A BAD IDEA: Just because Maryland is a blue state doesn’t mean Republicans should stay home on Election Day. Not voting gives Democrats the impression they hold a larger lock on ideas and support than they do.

QUOTE OF THE DAY:

“The city might want to reconsider giving him trees when he’s a known tree killer and maybe he’ll just cut them down in a year. … It’s like the SPCA giving a puppy to a known puppy killer. Adopting 10 puppies doesn’t make you a good person if you’re killing the five dogs you already have.”

– Sharon Weidenfeld, a resident of the Gentry Court community in Annapolis, speaking about the president of her homeowners association, who she says is cutting down healthy trees.
