Amid growing Democratic calls for her resignation, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi is so concerned about her job that her aides have reportedly resorted to sending allies a list of suggested tweets that praise the California Democrat.
Maggie Haberman of the New York Times reported on Thursday that “Pelosi aides are sending allies suggested supportive tweets on social media.” Haberman included a screenshot of examples in her tweet reporting the news, including, “23 million are about to lose their health care. Why are we blasting our most effective fighter?” and “There is so much at stake. The health care of millions is on the line. And some want to target the most effective legislator in modern history?”
“We cannot get distracted,” another example read. “Nancy Pelosi unifies her Caucus & delivers all the time. We must stay focused & #ProtectOurCare.”
Calls for Pelosi’s resignation escalated after Democratic candidate Jon Ossoff lost a special election to represent Georgia’s sixth congressional district on Tuesday. “Nancy Pelosi was a great speaker. She is a great leader. But her time has come and gone,” said Rep. Kathleen Rice, D-N.Y., one of the congressional Democrats plotting to replace Pelosi, on Thursday. “I believe that she is not the leader for the future of the Democratic Party. It’s that simple.”
Pelosi brushed off the mounting critiques at a Thursday news conference, calling herself “a master legislator” and “a strategic, politically astute leader.”
A Twitter search revealed that only a handful of people appear to have posted the tweets suggested by Pelosi’s team, including her former communications director and former scheduler.
