CNN on Monday aired a segment about an “attack” against an Asian American man in Los Angeles, which anchor Jon Berman said was “just the latest in an alarming surge of attacks against Asian Americans across the U.S. in recent months.”
Police are looking for two suspects. But incidentally, while Berman was heavily invested in the ethnicity of the victim, who said he was also called racist slurs by his attackers, he said not a word to describe the physical appearance of the assailants.
That’s strange because the good people at CNN cared a lot and have been careful to note, over and over again, that most of the rioters on Jan. 6 were white. They’re endlessly concerned about “white supremacy” and “white nationalism.”
So, in an assault that’s allegedly racially motivated, the race of the attackers might be worth knowing, especially if they’re at large. Then, we’d know who to look for.
But no. Berman said nothing. I had to go online to find out from a local news station that the suspects are Hispanic.
CNN has covered multiple similar attacks from earlier. Each time, it’s the same — no mention of the suspect’s race or ethnicity. Several of the incidents have been caught on tape, and fortunately, many of the alleged attackers have been caught. All of them have been black, with the exception of one named Salman Muflihi.
Does that say anything about the nature of the attacks? I’ll leave that up to sociologists. But you can be certain that had the suspects been white, CNN would have included that detail in its coverage.
