BRIGHT BULB Making progress

Nine Maryland schools have made it off the School Improvement list this year, and while three schools were added to the list, the overall number of schools on the list is down to 45. We may not get to the school system’s goal of 100 percent success by 2014 at this rate — but we’re on our way.

TWO THUMBS UP: This time they got their men — we hope

WHO: The Baltimore City Police Department

WHAT: The department finally arrested two suspects in former Baltimore City Councilman Kenneth Harris’ September murder. Commissioner Frederick Bealefeld had it right when he said that it took some real police work to find them. Let’s hope they are the right men.

WHY IT’S A GOOD IDEA: Harris’ murder ended the life of someone unafraid to hold government accountable to the people, devastated his family and painted Baltimore, once again, as a murder capital of the United States. Solving it will bring justice to his family and send a message to would-be thugs that they are not immune from the law.

QUOTE OF THE DAY:

“We have identified now that a certain part of it is due to the general economic slowdown, part is due to the prices customers pay. … Price elasticity is coming into play; the more customers have to pay for something, the less they tend to use it.” – Wayne Harbaugh, Baltimore Gas and Electric Co.’s vice president for pricing and regulatory services, on the recent lack of demand for electricity.
