With the shocking result of the British vote to leave the European Union fresh in everyone’s minds, political analysts in the United States are wondering whether the choice of Brexit says anything about our own presidential election.
Does Brexit show that nationalism is on the rise and anti-immigration voters will turn out in full force for Donald Trump? Or does the international turmoil mean the country needs someone with more diplomatic experience in the White House — say, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton?
We won’t know for days how the presidential polls will be affected by Brexit, if at all. But betting markets react to news almost immediately. How did presidential betting markets change as a result of Brexit?
All in all, Brexit seems to have had a small but noticeable effect on election betting odds. According to ElectionBettingOdds.com, when Brexit polls closed at 5 p.m. ET Thursday, Clinton had a 76 percent chance of winning the election to Trump’s 19.4 percent. By 12:15 a.m. Eastern Time on Friday, most news outlets had called the referendum for “Leave,” and betting markets had some time to respond. At that point, Clinton’s odds had dropped by 0.5 points while Trump’s remained the same.
But as time unfolds in a chaotic post-Brexit world, the numbers are changing. As of 12:43 p.m. Friday, Clinton has dropped to 72.2 percent while Trump has risen to 22.5 percent. Not exactly a game-changer, at least not yet, but it’s possible it could grow into something bigger. Perhaps betting markets are waiting to see if post-Brexit polls move the general election numbers at all.
It’s important to remember Election Day is still 136 days away. By that time, lots of other issues will be on Americans’ minds. Although Friday’s market drop and international consequences are on voters’ minds today, it likely won’t be a vote-moving issue in November. Immigration has been a major issue in this election, but Brexit doesn’t change much about the American immigration issue.
