Editorial: A disclosed conflict is no conflict

Maryland first lady Kendel Ehrlich disclosed last month that she makes $55,000 per year working part time as Comcast.

So?

“Conflict of interest,” shout goody-two-shoe crusaders across the state. At face value, sure; no, maybe.

Comcast holds millions of dollars of contracts with the state and is regulated by the Public Service Commission.

But since it?s out in the open, how can it be a conflict?

Now everyone is able to scrutinize her husband?s actions regarding Comcast for the most minute act of favoritism ? now and going back to the beginning of her employment.

Besides, it?s not as if she negotiates contracts between Comcast and the state. She interviews teens, parents, police officers and others for anti-drug programs.

Her salary has not changed since she first accepted the position in 2001 prior to her husband becoming governor. And the governor?s detractors and opponents have not, since the disclosure, come up with any Comcast sweet deals that we?ve found.

In 2006, it?s hard to believe that a woman should be shamed into quitting her job for the sake of her husband, especially a job she held before he took office.

C?mon!
