Netflix’s Blonde betrays everything positive that #MeToo ever stood for

Blonde, the new movie about Marilyn Monroe, is awful. It premiered on Netflix on Sept. 23 and stars the sensational Ana de Armas as Marilyn Monroe. It initially generated a lot of buzz for becoming Netflix’s first NC-17-rated movie, but after millions have seen the movie, it’s received attention for how shockingly bad it is.

Despite its poor quality, it’s even worse when it comes to honoring the goals of Hollywood’s elites after the #MeToo movement. The film contains everything that woke, leftist, liberal Hollywood elites complained about regarding women in cinema — and it has sullied the reputation of a legendary actress in the process.

WHY PLANNED PARENTHOOD IS MAD ABOUT BLONDE

This awful movie objectifies women, has gratuitous sex scenes, and portrays Monroe, one of the most famous actresses of all time, as little more than a sex-obsessed hussy. And while Marilyn Monroe was and still is recognized as a sex symbol, Blonde diminishes her own individuality. Instead, she is little more than a sexual pawn of a mid-20th-century Hollywood patriarchy.

Consider the bizarre nude and sex scenes Ana de Armas was asked to do in this film. From (essentially) being raped to get her start in movies, to a raunchy polyamorous relationship, to a sexual encounter with a president, the audience is left with an awkward and uneasy feeling nearly every time de Armas drops her clothes. It’s probably the first and only time many viewers wanted to look away from de Armas.

The worst thing about these scenes is that they did not have to be in the movie at all, because most of them did not really happen. Most of the “NC-17” content did not accurately portray the events of Monroe’s life. Its presence in the film raises the question: Why include such graphic content in a biographical movie if it isn’t even biographical? Given the perverted tone of the film, I think we can all figure out why.

But wait, weren’t films supposed to move away from female exploitation? Wasn’t the new era of Hollwyood, the era after the #MeToo movement, dedicated to focusing on female characters’ substance and not the contents of their undergarments?

The new enlightened Hollywood, the Tinsel Town after the #MeToo movement, was going to be different. Women weren’t going to be pieces of meat for the viewing pleasure of a patriarchal society. Characters and roles were going to require thought, involving interesting characters and sometimes even themes that gave greater agency to women. Women were not going to be relegated to roles involving mindless, salacious nudity. Hollywood was supposed to move on from these kinds of movies. Well, maybe it just wasn’t ever to be. If it was, the producers of Blonde didn’t get the memo.

The motto of Hollywood, of course, is “do as I say, not as I do.” The people behind Blonde didn’t care about empowering women, didn’t care about #MeToo, didn’t care about honoring Marilyn Monroe, and didn’t care about the truth. All they cared about was using the nude body of Ana de Armas to seduce viewers into watching the film. They not only betrayed their own leftist ideals, but they also tarnished the memory of a legendary actress, all just to make a buck and satisfy the hedonistic appetites of perverts.
