Meghan Markle may be married to British royalty, but there’s no denying she’s an American liberal.
If there were a way to capture all of the annoying, toxic qualities of the “social justice” movement and American liberalism in one event, the CBS special on Sunday with Markle and Prince Harry was it.
Harry more or less served as a prop to affirm all of Markle’s whining about the agonizing life she leads as the wife of a prince, co-signing for all of her grievances, which, in the spirit of social justice, includes being the victim of some vague form of racism.
Markle, who is half black, claimed during the interview with Oprah Winfrey that there were “concerns and conversations” from someone within Buckingham Palace “about how dark” their son’s skin would be before he was born in 2019. Who was it? Markle wouldn’t say. What, exactly, was the conversation? She and Harry declined to say. Harry said he was “uncomfortable” being asked to characterize the alleged remarks.
So, then, how do we know this has anything to do with racism? Well, because Markle says it does. That’s how social justice works. This is her truth.
Markle complained that she was treated unfairly by the British tabloids and that none of her concerns about her own safety were addressed by the monarchy. She complained that she and her family couldn’t retain royal status after leaving the United Kingdom to live in Canada. She said she had suicidal thoughts.
When she was whining, she was promoting her and her husband’s new media company because that’s what this is really about. As described in my book Privileged Victims: How America’s Culture Fascists Hijacked the Country and Elevated Its Worst People, advancement through victimhood is the defining trait of “social justice” and modern American liberalism.
Markle isn’t interesting, and if she has talent, it’s not obvious. But she does have grievance and a company to promote.
