One member of Congress definitely will not be attending President-elect Trump’s inauguration, the Boston Globe reports. She says it’s because she doesn’t want to “normalize” him.
In a break from tradition and from the rest of the Massachusetts congressional delegation, Representative Katherine Clark plans to boycott the upcoming inauguration of Republican President-elect Donald Trump as a form of ceremonial protest.
Clark, whose district includes many of the northern and western suburbs of Boston, said she believes attending the inauguration would “normalize” Trump’s promotion of “bigoted, misogynist, anti-Semitic, and racist claims.”
Clark will be one of just a few members boycotting — Rep. Luis Gutierrez, D-Ill., is the only other one the Globe names, and he’ll actually be there, but with protestors.
Clark is obviously free to feel as she does about Trump. Lots of people do. But as with all talk of “normalizing” Trump, that ship has sailed. You can’t get much more “normal” in America than being elected president.
