Lawyers at the Justice Department are having a really hard time explaining in court what exactly happened at the Capitol building on Jan. 6, but the media, of course, are dead sure that it was white supremacy.
Why not? Everything is white supremacy, according to liberals in the media. Gravity, math, and even attacks by black assailants on Asians are all evidence of white supremacy. Even when a white person isn’t in sight for miles, there is still, as NPR hilariously puts it, “multiracial whiteness” afoot.
These people never want to let go of Jan. 6. To wit, the New York Times on Friday ran an op-ed by Erin Aubry Kaplan literally headlined, “Let’s Stay Angry About Jan. 6.”
Kaplan wasted no time explaining what the riot on that day was about.
“This attack on the Capitol feels very personal, and not just because Jan. 6 is my birthday, and will never quite be the same,” she said. (Way to make it all about yourself!) “It’s because I saw the attempted coup as the worst-case-scenario conclusion of 12 years of steadily mounting fury over a Black president who had the audacity to see himself as a symbol for all Americans.”
There is a lot of video footage from that day. Some of it shows the rioters taking selfies on the House floor. Some of it shows Trump supporters joking about calling the president from Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s office. Some of it shows them smoking marijuana. And yes, some of it shows them in a physical confrontation with police, as they forced their way inside the building.
What is not on tape is even a single instance of anyone talking about Obama or expressing thoughts about race in America.
We actually know why that mob of angry Trump supporters descended on the Capitol that day. They believed that the election wasn’t fair. They believed that they had then-President Donald Trump’s support in righting that wrong.
What they actually planned on doing is a mystery, even to the people who have been tasked with proving the rioters are criminals.
“Authorities suggested for weeks in court hearings and papers that members of the far-right militia group plotted their attack in advance in an effort to block the peaceful transition of power,” the Associated Press said last week. “But prosecutors have since said it is not clear whether the group was targeting the Capitol before Jan. 6.”
In other words, the Capitol riot was probably a spur-of-the-moment incident with no discernible goal or tangible result.
However, that set of facts is not useful for the media and Democrats. Their intention is to make Jan. 6 about something much more sinister, never to let it go, and to hang it over the heads of Republicans for an eternity. And even if there is no evidence for it, they really, really need for this to be about their favorite topic — race.
It isn’t. But I’m very sorry that it ruined Erin Aubry Kaplan’s birthday.
